2014 Appeal: The Indian Ocean Sea Turtles

Sea Turtles need our support; they are suffering from exploitation of nesting areas to satisfy the tourist industry, casualties from small high speed boats offshore, tangling in the extensive trawling nets in the oceans, caught as a bycatch in fishing, and still harvested for their wonderfully coloured carapace. Support is needed to fund research programmes studying the nesting and migratory habits of sea turtles. They also seek to work closely with fisheries and encourage practices which do not cause such devastation to the turtles. Sea turtles are having a really difficult time: it is possible the Leatherback Turtle could vanish from our oceans in as little as twenty years. Six species of marine turtles are found in the Indian Ocean - South-East Asia region; it is vital that we try to find out as much as possible about how we can support these turtles.
