2023 Conservation Appeal - SAVING THE SPANISH POND TERRAPIN (auremys leprosa leprosa)

SAVING THE SPANISH POND TERRAPIN (auremys leprosa leprosa)

Members may remember that the BCG has previously supported the first phase of this important project with a donation towards the construction of a breeding and study station for the Mauremys leprosa leprosa which is the most endangered reptile species in France.

The station is being built in Bessieres, France, by the ASSOCIATON DU REFUGE DES TORTUES and the project is in cooperation and partnership with the CEN OCCITANE with the aim to re-introduce animals into the wild.

The BCG has just received a very comprehensive report on the first phase of the project. The building of the station has started and the construction is moving forward fast. Year 2023 will be a decisive moment for the future of the project. First of all there will be a discussion on the reintroduction strategy for the animals. Secondly the partnership will continue finishing the facility and thirdly a second fundraising campaign will be started. More funds are necessary because of the rise in the price of materials which has obliged the partnership to split the construction into different phases.

The BCG would like to make another contribution to secure the success of the station and we hope to bring the membership further news and progress reports via the Newsletters in 2023.

If you wish to make a donation towards the project to secure the future of this wonderful terrapin you can do so by adding an amount to your membership contribution or make a donation via the website on the PayPal button or send a cheque or postal order via mail to the membership secretary, either via the Registered address or the post box number on the membership form. Just mention: Saving the Spanish Pond Terrapin.
